    100 tummy teasers

Southwest Virginia has some great food finds

In January 2008, when I was still pretty new to the food beat, I asked readers to help me name 50 great food finds in Southwest Virginia. The tummy-teasing collection ranged from Roanoke Bagel Company bagels to extra-crispy buffalo wings at Sharkey's in Blacksburg.
Four and a half years later, a lot has changed on the food scene in our corner of the state, so I thought it would be fun to update the list. This time, I asked blog readers, colleagues and friends to help me come up with twice as many gastronomic delights. Believe it or not, the challenge was not coming up with 100 ideas; it was making the agonizing decision to pare the list to the target number.
That goes to show that even as the food scene has changed immensely, with food prices skyrocketing and some favorite restaurants closing, Southwest Virginia foodies still have a lot to love. This list, like the last one, is subjective. I have no doubt there are culinary gems in our region that didn't make the cut or never came to my attention.
If you note a glaring omission, I'd love to hear from you. Email me at lindsey.nair@roanoke.com, call me at 981-3343 or leave a comment at blogs.roanoke.com/fridgemagnet. To see a map of all 100 food finds, scroll to the end of the page or check it out here.

Natasha’s Market Cafe is my Choice this weekend…

I finally got a date with my lovely wife this week so we decided to have lunch at Natasha’s Market Cafe. I’ve only heard good things about Natasha’s cooking for years during her tenure at Oddfellas, Woodberry Inn and private catering. In fact I never heard anything negative about her. We walked in and there was Natasha, big smile and warm welcome. Sunny days in Floyd call for outside dining so we took our seats on the deck. Although the Citrus Steamed Rainbow Troutseemed delicious we decided to go with the specials (pictured below), Panko-Parmesan Crusted Catfish and a Grilled Chicken Club Wrap. Salad and thin crispy potatoes for sides. Two words, “Simply Delicioso”…

Natasha Shishkevish describes her cuisine as "country comfort food" with an upscale twist

FLOYD -- Most chefs I interview tell me they always dreamed of becoming a chef and owning their own restaurant.
They tell tales of cooking with their mothers as children, of having an innate curiosity about flavors that drove them to culinary school and their destined careers.
Natasha Shishkevish is not like most chefs I interview. When she was a little kid in Washington, D.C., her Russian mother wouldn't even let her help out in the kitchen.
"I was allowed to grease pans -- that was it," she said, "because I made such a mess."
Obviously, that all changed, because when I met Shishkevish last week, it was in her new restaurant, Natasha's Market Cafe in Floyd. The restaurant is the culmination of decades in the food business working as a caterer, a teacher and an executive chef.
At some point, the 49-year-old Shishkevish learned how to do a whole lot more than grease pans.
